Holistic Contribution

A word used a lot in mission work these days, and certainly in mission components such as business as mission, is "holistic." There is not a single need that families and communities deal with. There are many.

Chief among the range of needs is the need for Christ. Again, as we apply strategies such as BAM to help with the range of needs of the "whole" person, we must not make the mistake of leaving Jesus out of the equation. For Him, we attend to the other things.
In a quote by Mats Tunehag in "Business as Mission" that I like is, "The holistic mission of the Kingdom is to take the whole Gospel, to the whole man, by the whole church, to the whole world..."
All the pieces need to come together and function together for the glory of God.
When we minister to the full range of people's needs, our purpose is that they will see the glory and love of God in the process.
If we use business to make improvements in response to the communities' needs, we create a environment where the light of Christ can shine.
  • It does so within the businesses we create, where people can come to do good work in a wholesome environment.
  • It then radiates outward into the community as people receive the benefits of products, services, and economic dynamics that fuel other improvements in people's living environment and circumstances.

Job Creation

Job creation is intrinsically powerful. Mr. Ted Yamamori, CEO of WorldServe Ministries, has written and published that BAM must always be about "job making." It is that central to being effective as an outreach platform. He compares them to Aquila and Priscilla we read of in Acts.

Ac 18:1 After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.
2 There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome.
As we read through that text, we go on to learn that these two had gone into the new place and setup shop in their trade – tent making. They created jobs, even eventually employing Paul.
The difference may seem subtle, but it is critical. These two created a business that then created jobs. They did not move and go to work for a business, which is what the Apostle did during his time with them.
Creating valuable jobs is in itself an economic stimulus package. We mentioned previously how it them cascades and contributes in communities. Beyond the economics though, think for a moment about the emotional lift it gives to the people employed. Beyond the economics is a lifting in peoples sense of worth, all of which can ultimately be linked to God's love and value of them. This is so exciting it sets my head spinning – people whose lives have been on or below the lowest rungs of society being lifted in worth to the glory of God. They can then become a part of the community's / society's solution, where previously they were in a very real sense the problem.

Legitimate Business Can Gain Access

Entrepreneurs with capital and infrastructure to get started can venture into any mission field. Access is likely possible.

For-profit businesses have a way of finding and gaining confidence within communities. People's thinking doesn't have to stretch very far to see benefits to jobs and economic activity. Products and services that benefit people are easily embraced, too. This all contributes to paving a path for the gospel.
There has been some bad mission history that we need to be aware of. Some have gone before, feigning business as a poorly concealed disguise for evangelism. We must not lose focus of this painful lesson from history. The business must be legitimate and a positive contributor to the communities. If not, it will be seen as a ruse and do more harm than good for the gospel mission.
The simple process of creating jobs, allowing individuals and families to achieve real increases in quality of life and sufficiency, are some of the most basic, yet real, outcome of authentic business creation.
The transformational benefit and impact of real jobs in the community can cascade from there. Families have more resources to acquire products and services to meet their needs, stimulating other businesses in the community. Increase resources can begin to flow through the community and increase an economic vitality that touches many lives.
This combines with the success of valuable products and services entering the local economies. And this is not limited to the local communities. Products and services can flow to other communities, stimulating increased economic dynamics and vitality to growing spheres of people.

Larry
