A word used a lot in mission work these days, and certainly in mission components such as business as mission, is "holistic." There is not a single need that families and communities deal with. There are many.
Chief among the range of needs is the need for Christ. Again, as we apply strategies such as BAM to help with the range of needs of the "whole" person, we must not make the mistake of leaving Jesus out of the equation. For Him, we attend to the other things.
In a quote by Mats Tunehag in "Business as Mission" that I like is, "The holistic mission of the Kingdom is to take the whole Gospel, to the whole man, by the whole church, to the whole world..."
All the pieces need to come together and function together for the glory of God.
When we minister to the full range of people's needs, our purpose is that they will see the glory and love of God in the process.
If we use business to make improvements in response to the communities' needs, we create a environment where the light of Christ can shine.
- It does so within the businesses we create, where people can come to do good work in a wholesome environment.
- It then radiates outward into the community as people receive the benefits of products, services, and economic dynamics that fuel other improvements in people's living environment and circumstances.
