Elements and Characteristics of Servant Leadership

Christian leadership

Many models for leadership illustrate a top down hierarchy. The positions of power and authority are at the top of the organization.

Servant leadership reverses that thinking. It emphasizes collaboration, trust, empathy, and the ethical use of power. The individual leader is a servant first, making the conscious decision to lead in order to better serve others, not to increase his own power. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.

What do servant leaders do?
  • Devote themselves to serving others’ needs
  • Focus on understanding and meeting the needs of those they lead
  • Develop employees to bring out their best
  • Coach and encourage others
  • Facilitate personal growth in all who work with them
  • Listen deeply
  • Build a sense of community in the organization

Servant leaders are effective because the needs of followers are cared for.
This allows members to perform at their best.

I remember several years ago while serving in a church in a different part of the state, and at a time when we were suffering from some "leadership" issues that I was asked by my then pastor if I knew what spiritual personality trait I possessed (this question was asked rather smugly and sarcastically). I responded with, "Yes, I believe I do." With that, his response was (again sarcastically), "Yeah, you're a servant." I replied that I felt that to be a servant was in no way something to be ashamed of, and that, in fact, Jesus had told us that He did not come to be ministered unto, but rather, to minister unto. The pastor did not like my response. Nonetheless, if God has gifted us with a particular gift of His choosing, let us put that gift to good and faithful use to the edification of His Church as a Body, and the individual members of that Body to their spiritual growth.
